In a recent “in-district” event, Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA) met with the workers and leadership at rubber manufacturer West American Rubber Company (WARCO), based here, to learn about the challenges family-owned businesses face, business growth, and taxation.

Rep. Correa toured WARCO facilities with Timothy Hemstreet, Chief Executive Officer, WARCO, a 115-year-old rubber manufacturing business and an industry leader in California made sheet, molded, and extruded rubber products. The family-owned business manages the process from research and development to raw material procurement, to mixing, to production, and to final packaged finished products.

Rep. Correa, Co-Chair of the Congressional Family Business Caucus, met with and spoke to Hemstreet and WARCO workers on the issues of healthcare, business growth, and social security.

“It was great exciting having Rep. Correa come to our facility to meet our exceptional people, see how we work, understand our challenges, and get a better understanding of the policies we need to help our community together,” said WARCO’s Hemstreet.

Rep. Correa discussed a variety of legislative topics, including potential progress in healthcare legislation, the need to address the long-term needs of Social Security, and the importance of hard-working family businesses in communities.

The event was organized by Family Enterprise USA, Washington, D.C., advocates for family-owned businesses across the country. In attendance were Tim Schultz, Chief Executive Officer, and Pat Soldano, President, of Family Enterprise USA and its sister organization, Family Enterprise USA Action.

WARCO, with 180 employees, is a member of Family Enterprise USA, and the event is part of series of meetings between family-owned businesses and their district Congressional lawmakers organized by Family Enterprise USA.

“It’s important that we in Congress understand the day to day needs of family businesses in our districts,” said Rep. Correa at the WARCO event. “Family businesses are the engine that keeps this country moving forward, and we must understand how important family businesses are to growing the economy, creating jobs, being responsible to their employees, and to our communities,” he said.

Since 2017, Rep. Correa has represented California’s 46th congressional district, serving Orange County’s majority Hispanic area, including the cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Orange.

“Our role is to be a ‘hub,’ or connector, of family-owned businesses with our legislators,” said Schultz of Family Enterprise USA. “Connecting Congressman Correa directly with leading families of family businesses in his district is part of educating our lawmakers on the challenges family-owned businesses face every day,” he said.  “Knowing these real-life challenges will help lawmakers make better policies to grow the economy, support employees, and build communities.”

America’s family businesses are the largest private employers in the country, accounting for 83.3 million jobs in some 32 million family businesses across the country, according to research. These businesses contribute $7.7 trillion annually to U.S. gross domestic product.
